It's one of the first questions people ask when they see a Metal Stickem™ for the first time: how long will this actually last?

It's a fair question, because most people's frame of reference for adhesive stickers is vinyl — and vinyl has a reputation for fading, peeling, and looking worn within a year or two. If you've ever watched a bumper sticker go from crisp to cracked, or pulled a laptop decal that had started to bubble at the edges, you know exactly what we mean.

Metal Stickems™ are a fundamentally different product, and they age very differently. We've been manufacturing metal adhesive emblems since the 1970s, and many of the emblems we made in those early decades are still on the trophies and plaques they were applied to — looking essentially the same as the day they were placed.

Here's everything you need to know about the lifespan of a Metal Stickem™, what affects it, and how to make sure yours lasts as long as possible.


The Short Answer: Metal Stickems™ Last for Decades

Under normal conditions, with proper application to a suitable surface, a Metal Stickem™ can reasonably be expected to last 10 to 25 years or more. That's not a marketing claim — it's a direct consequence of how the product is made.

Vinyl stickers degrade because their components — the PVC film, the ink layer, the clear laminate, and the adhesive — all react to UV light, moisture, and temperature changes over time. The ink fades. The laminate cracks. The edges lift. It's an inherent limitation of the material.

Metal Stickems™ don't have most of those failure modes. The disc itself is metal — brass, aluminum, or zinc alloy depending on the format — and metal doesn't fade, crack, or bubble. The design is either stamped directly into the surface of the disc or fired into enamel fills, so there's no separate ink layer to degrade. What you see on day one is structurally part of the piece itself, not a coating on top of it.

The one component that does age is the adhesive — and we'll cover that in detail below.


What Actually Determines How Long a Metal Stickem™ Lasts

1. The Surface It's Applied To

The single biggest factor in adhesive longevity isn't the emblem itself — it's the surface it's bonded to. Metal Stickems™ form their strongest, longest-lasting bonds on smooth, non-porous surfaces: painted metal, powder-coated finishes, hard plastic, glass, lacquered wood, and polycarbonate.

On these surfaces, the pressure-sensitive adhesive creates a strong molecular bond that holds up to temperature cycling, humidity, and daily handling for many years. On porous, rough, or flexible surfaces — raw wood, fabric, soft silicone, or unfinished concrete — the adhesive has less contact area and the bond is weaker and shorter-lived.

Proper surface preparation also matters enormously. An emblem applied to a surface cleaned with isopropyl alcohol will outlast the same emblem applied to a surface with even a thin film of skin oil or dust — by years in some cases. The adhesive needs clean, dry contact to form its best bond.

2. UV Exposure

This is where Metal Stickems™ have a major advantage over vinyl. UV radiation is the primary enemy of printed stickers — it breaks down the ink, yellows the laminate, and embrittles the film. Metal Stickems™ are essentially UV-immune. The metal disc doesn't fade, and enamel-filled designs hold their color extremely well under sun exposure.

The adhesive, however, can be affected by prolonged direct UV exposure over many years. If an emblem is in permanent, intense direct sunlight — say, on an outdoor vehicle panel in a southern climate — the adhesive may begin to lose tack more quickly than it would indoors or in partial shade. For most applications this isn't a practical concern, but it's worth knowing for outdoor use cases.

3. Temperature Extremes

Pressure-sensitive adhesives perform best within a moderate temperature range — roughly 40°F to 200°F (4°C to 93°C) for most industrial adhesive formulations. Within that range, bonding strength is stable and reliable.

Extreme cold can temporarily reduce adhesive flexibility, making edges slightly more vulnerable to lifting if the piece is flexed. Extreme heat — beyond what you'd encounter in most everyday environments — can soften the adhesive and reduce bond strength over time. For typical uses such as indoor displays, gear, lockers, and vehicles parked in shade, neither of these is a real-world concern.

4. Moisture and Submersion

Metal Stickems™ handle moisture very well. The metal disc itself doesn't rust — brass and aluminum are both corrosion-resistant — and the adhesive is water-resistant under normal conditions. Rain, splashes, and hand-washing won't affect a properly applied emblem.

Prolonged submersion is a different story. If an emblem is regularly submerged — on swim gear, dive equipment, or items that go through a dishwasher — the repeated water exposure will eventually work under the edges of the adhesive and weaken the bond. For water-immersion applications, we recommend applying a thin bead of clear sealant around the edge of the emblem after installation.

5. Physical Stress and Flexing

Metal Stickems™ are rigid discs. On a rigid surface, they perform indefinitely. On a surface that flexes repeatedly — a soft phone case, a bag that's constantly compressed, a flexible panel — the rigid disc and the flexible substrate work against each other, and edge lifting can develop over time. The emblem itself won't break, but the adhesive bond at the edges may fatigue.

For flexible surfaces, vinyl is genuinely the better-suited product. For everything rigid, metal wins on longevity without question.

The Metal Disc vs. the Adhesive: Two Very Different Aging Stories

It's worth separating these two components, because they age at very different rates.

The metal disc itself will likely outlast anything you attach it to. Brass, aluminum, and zinc alloy don't corrode under normal conditions. The embossed design doesn't wear away with handling. Enamel color fills remain stable for decades. If you removed a Metal Stickem™ from a surface after twenty years, the disc itself would look virtually new.

The adhesive is the limiting factor. Like all pressure-sensitive adhesives, it does gradually change over time — typically becoming stiffer and more brittle with age. Under ideal conditions such as indoor display at moderate temperature with no UV exposure, this process is extremely slow and the bond remains strong for many years. Under harsh conditions, the process is faster.

The practical implication: when a Metal Stickem™ ever does fail, it is almost always an adhesive failure — not a metal failure. The disc remains perfect. In many cases you can simply clean the back of the disc, apply fresh adhesive, and reattach it good as new.


How to Maximize the Lifespan of Your Metal Stickem™

  • Clean the surface before applying. Wipe the application area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. This single step has the biggest impact on long-term bond strength.
  • Apply firm, even pressure at installation. Press from the center outward to ensure full contact across the entire adhesive surface. Partial contact at installation means weaker bond strength from day one.
  • Allow 24–72 hours to cure. The adhesive reaches full strength gradually. Avoid submerging or stressing the emblem during the curing window.
  • Choose rigid surfaces over flexible ones. A hard shell case will give you a significantly longer bond life than a soft silicone one.
  • Avoid dishwasher exposure. Hand washing is fine. Repeated dishwasher cycles — hot water, steam, and detergent — will shorten adhesive lifespan considerably.
  • Seal the edge for outdoor or moisture-prone applications. A thin bead of clear sealant around the perimeter of the emblem after installation dramatically improves moisture resistance.
